The first phase of buildings from the CAH/AEROPOLIS Master Plan is an exciting moment in the transformation of the Prague Airport development ‘vision’. The Skywalk, Bus Terminal, Hotel and Garages together will be part of the new identity of the airport, giving Prague Airport a sophisticated, attractive and world-class quality. In parallel with the new expansion of Terminal 2, this phase will be the catalyst for increased international flights, travelers and more rapid commercial development in and around the airport campus.
Our strategy was generally to optimize the functionality of all new buildings, keeping a rational, clear and ‘readable’ language of urban-architectural space. The new airport developments should be easily understood, ‘user friendly’ and at the same time beautiful and timeless. Our intention is to give Prague Airport an exciting, sensory level appeal of the fabulous experience of travelling.
There is a very clear separation of ARRIVALS and DEPARTURES routes, very well-organized separation of public and private transportation modes and a ‘readable’ urban morphology which creates a recognizable ‘city’ atmosphere at the airport.
It is the ‘spine’ of the whole airport complex, connecting all buildings to the Terminal, moving thousands of people, quickly and easily, regardless of weather or traffic conditions. The Skywalk is a completely glazed object, for maximum light and the feeling of ‘levitating’ or ‘flying’.
The architectural language, according to building typologies, should reflect a timeless quality and strong visual identity, while at the same time showing its spirit as the biggest, 21st Century travel hub in the country. There should be, in our opinion, a certain sophisticated ‘grandness’ about the buildings, even if expressed in a minimalistic or controlled aesthetic.
