International competition to design a 248-meter pedestrian/cycling bridge in Prague, connecting the district of Karlin to Holesovice, crossing the Vltava River and touching down on Stvanice recreational sport island mid-span.
On the Holešovice side, the bank is reinforced against floods by massive stone steps together with dense native vegetation to return to its more natural habitat and softly line the harsh environment of Holešovice with friendly greenery. Residents will be able to comfortably descend from the waterfront road level directly to the river and to the stop of the P7 HolKa ferry.
We attribute an equal role to the island of Štvanice. Along the elegant arch of the footbridge to Karlín, a pair of arches on Štvanice run from opposite banks, which slope down to the island using ramps with a slope of less than 6% for very easy barrier-free access.
Its lines are simple and keep modestly low above the horizon. But it stands out with its uncompromising engineering skills, which allows the building to be as slender as if it were just an imaginary trajectory of a pebble being tossed over water.
